ZERO calories and healthy, too good to be true?!

Dear fellow bloggers,

Nowadays, living your life in a healthy way is not that obvious anymore. People tend to get fatter and fatter and those who want to lose weight or control it, often resort to diet products, which mostly contain unhealthy sweeteners such as aspartame. That’s why scientists all over the world have been eagerly searching for healthier alternatives.

The innovation I’m talking about today, is the result of that quest for healthier sweeteners: the Stevia plant. It’s a small plant that mainly grows in tropic climates as in Brazil or Paraguay and that has been used by tribes for over decades. This “green sugar” can be up to 300 times as sweet as sugar and contains ZERO calories. Too good to be true, you'll probably think. Well, not this time! Too good? Definitely! True? Absolutely positive!

The substance Rebaudioside A can be extracted from the leaves and used as a sweetener. In December 2008 it has been generally recognized as safe in the US. Within two years of approval, Stevia sales touched almost a billion dollar. As of December 2011, the Stevia sweetener is permitted as a food additive in the European Union. The Coca Cola company is already planning on using the sweetener in its softdrinks, so I think the Stevia plant will have a bright future ahead of it!
