Do you,
eco-minded MTB-student, also get frustrated sometimes by the amount of litter
you encounter in the streets and parks of Ghent? Then you are going to love this
weekend, because this weekend everybody does the spring-cleaning!
When
Katrien Verbeke of Delhaize gave a lecture about durability, she mentioned an
initiative called ‘What’s up? Clean up!’ With an ambassador as Kim Gevaert to
promote this event; Delhaize and Brico are organizing this national
spring-clean to get rid of as much litter as possible. Participants have to
sign up on the website www.whatsupcleanup.be,
choose a location to clean up, get their free cleaning kit at Brico and get
coupons afterwards as a reward. This weekend (the 24th and 25th of March 2012) 17,672
volunteers are cleaning up our entire country.
But this
isn’t the only initiative to clean up our environment. Maybe you’ve seen some
of the posters of the ‘Gentsche gruute kuis’? With slogans as ‘Scheetse,
helpte gij zondag uuk weer een beetse?’ Ivago and the city of Ghent are trying to get our attention, and to incite
us to action to help clean up our neighborhood. They want to make a fun event
out of it, offering free breakfast and an aperitif in the afternoon so you can
have a little get-together with your neighbors. Last year there were over 1,000
volunteers for the ‘Gentsche gruute kuis’. Hopefully it will be just as successful
this Sunday!
So what do
you think about these initiatives? Are you helping out this weekend?
