Blue, the new green!

Last week, Leen suggested to “talk fashion”!  She wrote in her blog about designers taking on the “Green Carpet Challenge”. One of these stellar brands that has pledged to create eco-friendly designs for this season’s red carpets is Chanel. Because green is the new black!

But Chanel is not only ‘green’ on the red carpet. This month Chanel launches the Hydra Beauty cream. The star ingredient of this anti-aging cream is blue ginger. Scientists of Chanel have discovered this blue ginger in the Vohimana reserve in Madagascar. The blue ginger has been used by the locals in the traditional medicine for generations, because of its powerful antioxidant properties. Chanel scientists have discovered that these antioxidant molecules are beauty molecules for the skin; above all they protect it and block the spread of free radicals in the skin, which are responsible for skin aging. This beauty cream captures all the beneficial properties of blue ginger.

The beauty brand Chanel has set up an ethical supply channel in the Vohimana reserve, in partnership with the local NGO “l’Homme et l’Environnement”. Together with this NGO they show the local population that the forest can be ally. They want to make them aware of the fact that they must protect the environment and stop all the devastating fire actions in the forest. A next step has been the start of a reforestation program, involving the local community to restore the forest.

Today, over 70 families have taken a blue ginger production and been able to improve their everyday life thanks to this cultivation. Chanel has funded the construction of a bush laboratory. This laboratory in the middle of the forest enables real interactions with the local populations since they are actually training the people who work there. In exchange for the cultivation of ginger for Chanel’s beauty products, they provide a real passing on of knowhow.

This is one of the many efforts Chanel makes to save the environment. You see, ecology can also be chic!
