There’s an app for that

During yesterday’s class, we learned about a green innovation called the Ecobutton. This power saving device can be plugged onto every computer using a USB cable. Once pushed, the button will put your PC into ‘Ecomode’. Sounded like a great eco-friendly innovation to me!

Since most of us MTB-students have a smartphone today, I launched a search on Google Play (formerly Android Market) looking for an app that can do the same for our phones. Luckily, as our mentor Steve Jobs proclaimed, there’s an app for everything. So I found the ‘GreenPower free battery saver’ from Gael Pouzerate.

Unlike the Ecobutton that you need to press first before it starts saving energy, the GreenPower app is fully automatic. Once installed, it will save your battery by smartly managing your Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection and the transfer of mobile data, all by itself. This app will turn them off when you don’t need them, and automatically switch them back on when needed by you or by other apps (e.g. synchronizing your Facebook contacts with your smartphone).

This app will help us save energy and time, and is absolutely free. Download it here and let me know what you think!
